Fire pits are wonderful accessories for outdoor entertaining and may be a great addition to your property.
Here are some safety tips from SERVPRO of Hendricks County when using your fire pits in Brownsburg, Indiana.
Location
- Place your fire pit at least 10 feet away from any other structures to ensure a safe distance from sparks igniting other structures or smoke invading another structure.
- Do not set your fire pit on a covered deck or under tree branches to ensure that flames and sparks will not set objects on fire.
Under the Pit
- Make sure you have the proper type of bedding under the fire pit such as stone, brick, gravel, or concrete.
- Never place over a wooden deck or over dry grass; this will prevent causing a spark to the ground below the pit.
Weather
- Do not use your fire pit on windy days.
- Check the breeze to see what direction the breeze is flowing and place the fire pit out of the breeze.
Lighting the Fire Pit
- Do not use lighter fluid or gasoline to light the fire.
- Kindling such as newspaper, pine needles, etc., are great starters for your fire pit.
- Always have hose or water nearby in case the fire starts to spread.
Make sure your town or covenant rules allow for burning a fire pit.
